WHITE SOX SHUT OUT MARINERS BEHIND ED WALSH, FOUR HOMERS
Eternal Baseball
CHICAGO – For one night at least, Chicago starter Ed Walsh stood taller than Seattle ace Randy Johnson.
Walsh (standing 6’1) turned in a dominant performance for the White Sox on Monday, outdueling Johnson (6’10) in a complete game shutout as Chicago blanked Seattle 9-0 on the opening game of spring training.
Randy Johnson did not pitch poorly (6 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 7 K) but allowed a solo homer to Robin Ventura in the second inning and an RBI double to Shoeless Joe Jackson in the sixth, departing after six innings trailing 2-0. Meanwhile, Chicago starter Ed Walsh rolled all night, avoiding trouble while allowing just four hits in a complete game shutout.
Chicago did most of their damage against a pair of Seattle relievers. Eight of Chicago’s ten hits on the evening went for extra bases, including home runs from Ventura, Jackson, Magglio Ordonez, and Minnie Minoso. Mariners relievers Jeff Nelson and Floyd Bannister combined to allow seven earned runs over just two innings.
Randy Johnson (0-1) took the loss for Seattle, though he pitched well enough to keep Seattle in the game for six innings. Ed Walsh’s (1-0) complete game shutout (9 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 11 K) set the tone for Chicago.
Tuesday night brings game two of this pre-season opening series. Seattle turns to right-hander “King Felix” Hernandez while Miami hands the ball to left-hander Doc White. First pitch from Guaranteed Rate Field is at 7:05 PM EST.
